Bathroom Maintenance Guide for Utah Homeowners

June 27, 2025

When you think of weekend chores, bathroom maintenance is probably the last one on your to-do list. You’re not alone. While cleaning is a favorite hobby for many Utahans, wiping down the kitchen platform or vacuuming the bedroom tops their list, not bathroom maintenance.

That said, your bathroom gets plenty of use every day. Your mornings start with brushing, shaving, showering, and makeup, and your evenings end with a nighttime routine in the bathroom. The bottom line is that it needs to stay in good shape.

Why Bathroom Maintenance Is Non-Negotiable

No matter how much you dislike wiping down a toilet seat or removing the grime from the corners of your walk-in shower, there’s no escaping these chores. Removing all that dirt, moisture, and grime is necessary to prevent mold in your bathroom.

Mold can lead to several health issues among older adults and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma. Keeping your bathroom clean and dry lowers the chances of mold and other infestations.

Regular bathroom maintenance also reduces the risk of falls. Given that every one out of four older Americans falls each year, keeping your bathroom clean can save you a trip to the ER.

Another lesser-known benefit is increased real estate value. A clean, well-maintained bathroom is less likely to attract mold or structural damage. This significantly increases your chances of fetching a higher asking price should you put your house on the market.

Bathroom Maintenance Tips to Get Started

Although you can design a bathroom to make it easy to clean, it’ll still need maintenance. And it’s all about getting the right cleaning supplies and working your way from the top to the floor.

Here’s how:

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you step into your bathroom, be sure to pack all the supplies you need. You should have a bucket, four to five rags, glass, wood, and floor cleaners, rubber gloves, a toilet brush, a microfiber mop, and a hard-bristled brush to clean the grout. Wear a mask and comfortable clothing during bathroom maintenance.

2. Create A Bathroom Cleaning Checklist

Small or large, every bathroom is different. While some restrooms have bathtubs, others have walk-in showers. Create your bathroom cleaning checklist to see what needs to be cleaned and how you plan to do it. Work your way through the list so you don’t miss anything.

3. Clear Out the Clutter

Start with clearing out the clutter. Like most bathrooms in Utah, yours will have towels hanging by the hooks, toiletries stocked up on the counters or in the vanity, and a shower or bathroom mat that has seen better days.

Remove all of this clutter one by one so you can clean every surface. Wash bath towels, rugs, and mats before putting them back. Wipe down all the counters and cabinets, wash the toothbrush holder, and toss out empty bottles into the trash.

4. Wipe Down Each Part of Your Bathroom

Once the clutter is gone, start cleaning one area at a time. This step-by-step approach speeds up bathroom maintenance. Here’s what you need to clean:

  • Sink and Faucets: Use a sanitizer to wipe down the faucets and the sink. Clean the handles and drain areas thoroughly to remove any grime and dirt.
  • Toilet: Thoroughly disinfect inside the toilet bowl and around the seat, lid, and base using a toilet cleaner. Don’t forget to check behind the toilet. This area collects a lot of grime but is easily overlooked.
  • Mirrors and Glass: Use a glass cleaner to remove soap scum and water stains from your vanity mirror, windows, and shower doors. You can buff dry to make them spotless. If you use curtains, remove them for a quick wash.
  • Walls and Floors: Wipe down the walls and floors with a wet rag first, then clean them with a solution of soap and water or your favorite cleaner. Give them a final pass with a dry microfiber cloth.

If you want to make bathroom maintenance easier, you can add laser-etched tiles to your walls and floors. They don’t trap dirt and grime as easily and typically require a wipe-down with a wet rag.

  • Door Handles and Cabinets: Disinfecting door knobs should be on your weekly bathroom maintenance checklist. Use a good quality sanitizer and wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. When cleaning cabinets, use a paint or wood-friendly cleaner.
  • Shower and Tub: Scrub down every inch of your shower and tub as they tend to gather the toughest stains and grime. You’ll probably need to pretreat the trouble spots with a professional-grade cleaner or a paste of water and baking soda. After that, you can wipe them down with a wet rag and finally rinse them with water.
  • Light Fixtures: Dust bathroom lights every week. When deep cleaning, turn off the lights and let them cool down first. Wipe down fixtures and shades with a damp microfiber cloth to remove dust and grime. However, use only a dry cloth to clean the bulbs.

Go through your bathroom maintenance checklist. See if you’ve missed anything. If not, start organizing your bathroom.

5. Organize Your Bathroom

Arrange all your toiletries and other essentials in the cabinets. Throw away or recycle anything you no longer need or that has expired. Use your bathroom storage strategically to organize everything.

You can use drawer dividers to organize smaller items like makeup, brushes, razors, or medicines. Color code dividers so you can find what you want without rummaging through the drawers, especially on busy mornings.

Another way to organize your bathroom is to install stackable shelves, baskets, or plastic bins inside cabinets. You can label the bins and store essentials like shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and lotions.

Use hooks and towel bars to hang your robes, shower caps, and loofahs. However, if your family is growing or your needs have changed, consider adding more storage to your bathroom.

Keep Your Bathroom Clean and Dry
